Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get Portfolio Maestro to work?

  1. First, make sure that Portfolio Maestro is registered and there is no problem with the registration
  2. If the software is registered, then try going to Help and reviewing the section "Getting Started with Portfolio Maestro."

I registered the product, but I'm still having problems. Now what?

  1. Make sure your login to TradeStation® is valid
  2. Make sure you are not logged into TradeStation® 8 when running a backtest
  3. Make sure you read the section on “Setting up Price Sources”
  4. Make sure the software has not been re-installed in a different location
  5. Make sure that system groups have valid strategies applied and symbol lists

Why is it that the Common Range of Loaded Prices does not reflect the range that was used in my previous test?

If symbol data is available only from a certain date, say 2004, and the requested range in the previous test was 01/01/2000 – 01/01/2008 then the Common Range of Loaded Prices will not reflect the range 01/01/2000 – 01/01/2008. However Portfolio Maestro will know that the symbol is not available and will not request the symbol again.

Why do I have to do a manual download of prices for my test?

There is only a certain amount of data that TradeStation® 8 allows downloading automatically. If too much data, specifically intra-day data, is requested TradeStation® 8 suggests making a download request.

Why don't my trades in Portfolio Maestro match up with my trades in the TradeStation Strategy Performance Report?

The reasons could be different settings for slippage and bars referenced between Portfolio Maestro and TradeStation®. Also in very few cases, Portfolio Maestro may interpret trades differently than TradeStation®. The difference in such cases is very small. If you notice a large difference between Portfolio Maestro and TradeStation® results please contact RINA Technologies’ technical support.

Can I test my strategies written in TradeStation 2000i in Portfolio Maestro on text files?

Yes you can.

Can I test my strategies written in TradeStation 2000i in Portfolio Maestro on Bloomberg prices?

Yes you can.

Why is the ‘Backtest Portfolio’ button disabled after I created my portfolio by combing several portfolios in one?

This is because one of the portfolios combined did not have a symbol list (or strategy). Please go to that portfolio and correct it. Your combined portfolio should be automatically updated.

Why doesn't the “View Orders Report” show filled orders when my portfolio had many?

The “View Orders Report” shows filled and cancelled orders during the last bar only. For a daily test it shows them on the last day. However, for a portfolio with daily and intraday data it will show these orders only for the last intraday bar. The last bar can be found under View Performance Report in the Settings tab.
